RESISTANCE IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT: UPRISING
On January 18th 1981, 13 British teenagers burned to death during a birthday party – quickly rumor had it that this was a right-wing firebombing. In their three-part documentary series Steve McQueen and James Rogan look at the tragedy from all angles. They talk to survivors, family members, the police and activists, and recreate the cultural context of the Thatcher years in Great Britain, which were dominated by racial tensions. It’s the equally brilliant documentary counterpart to McQueen’s SMALL AXE series.
