Pansori is a century-old Korean tradition of musical narration, where a singer accompanied by a drummer declaims an epic text. Kwon-taek Ims film tells of a Pansori master, who wanders the rural areas of South Korea with his two adopted children, trying to keep the old tradition alive against Japanese and American cultural imports. Upon its release in South Korea this film was a cultural phenomenon, attracting over a million cinema-goers in Seoul alone.
