THE MASTERMIND

The title is clearly meant to be ironic: unemployed carpenter J.B. hatches a plan to steal a work of art, but unlike most characters in the popular heist movie genre, he doesn’t exactly turn out to be a genius of his craft. Josh O'Connor (CHALLENGERS) embodies the beautiful loser in Kelly Reichardt’s (CERTAIN WOMEN) latest film, which is not only set in the 1970s, but also fittingly follows in the cinematic tradition of New Hollywood's genre deconstructions. Less a thriller than a film about human fallibility and unfulfilled dreams.
