THE PAINTED BIRD
During the Second World War a boy flees from town to town in a nameless eastern European country. His aunt has died, who had his parents’ mission to save him from certain death in a concentration camp. Based on the controversial eponymous 1965 novel by Jerzy Kosińksi, Czech director Václav Mahoul depicts antisemitic cruelty by the Nazis and the population in brillantly composed black and white images. A towering and harrowing masterpiece.
