“What is being said comes straight out of files, biographies and interviews. How it is said, though, is sometimes pure invention.” Already this first text on the screen of this two-parter makes clear how difficult it is to do justice to the left-wing SPD politician Herbert Wehner (1906-1990), who both played a major part in establishing the “German Unity Day” and was infamous for some remarkable profanities. With this patchwork film of black-and-white re-enactment scenes and interviews in color Breloer nevertheless manages to accomplish the impossible.
