Certain Women

Episodes from the lives of three women in Montana: Lawyer Laura (Laura Dern) becomes more in-volved in the fate of one of her clients than she might like; stressed-out Gina (Michelle Williams) is trying to maintain a facade of functional family life; lonely farm worker Jamie is attracted to lawyer Beth, who teaches a course in school law. Kelly Reichardt (NIGHT MOVES) only loosely connects these episodes in her adaptation of three stories by American author Maile Meloy. The narratives re-volve around loneliness, the class divide, and missed opportunities – and the vast emptiness of the Northwestern United States, which Reichardt has repeatedly explored in her cinematic work. A rarity in US cinema which increasingly disregards the diversity of the regions within the country in the name of global marketability. CERTAIN WOMEN also stands out because of a superb ensemble cast, where high-profile actresses naturally fit in.
