The most beautiful lunatic in film history: Catherine Deneuve, a mere 20 years old when the film was shot, plays the young beauty specialist who is slowly losing touch with reality. What those around her take to be dreamy timidity turns into dangerous delusion. When her sister, whom Carole shares an apartment with, leaves for a holiday, catastrophe ensues: feeling threatened, Carole commits a murder. Sold to a British production company as a cheap thriller from the PSYCHO fold, the film went on to win a Silver Bear at the 1965 Berlinale. Jazz legend Chico Hamilton wrote the original music.
