THE HANDMAIDEN

An exquisite erotic thriller by OLDBOY-director Park Chan-wook, based on Sarah Water’s crime novel FINGER-SMITH (2002). The Korean filmmaker changes the scene from Victorian England to East Asia in the 1930s. Sookee, a young Korean woman, is hired as a house maid by the wealthy Japanese heiress Hideko. With that, a criminal and erotic game commences. Told from different perspectives, nothing is as it seems in the beginning, and nobody is innocent. Park clearly enjoys his work, particularly the staging of the sometimes quite eccentric sex scenes.
