George Orwell's bitter version of a totalitarian state is one of the most widely read works of modern literature. The title »1984« stands for a society full of fear and without any personal freedom. Winston Smith lives in London in a shabby room, predominated by a huge tele-screen, manipulating his thoughts and controlling his behaviour. When he encounters Julia, things change for Winston. They meet frequently outside the town, away from the threatening surveillance. Further hope change in his life comes with O'Brian, whom he takes for a supporter of the underground resistance movement. O'Brian, however, betrays Winston the authorities. he is arrested and subjected to a special program of physical and psychic torture.
