LE RETOUR D’UN AVENTURIER by Moustapha Alassane (1942-2015) is a classic of African cinema. The parody of a western, set in a village in Niger in the 60s, tells the story of a young man coming home from a trip abroad with a suitcase full of cowboy costumes, which he gives to his friends. Dressed up, they enact scenes of American westerns, herding livestock, getting into barroom brawls, and staging gunfights. This game with the western’s conventions is full of slapstick fun, but under the surface hides a complex story of rebellion against the elders. Serge Moati’s LES COWBOYS SONT NOIRS shows “the making of” the film underlining the significance that these cowboys are Africans.

The screening is introduced by film curator Dorothee Wenner and Ekaterina Degot.
