»Dick Laurent is dead«, comes out f the intercom: Saxophone player Fred feels threatened by dark forces that seem to reach all the way into his and his wife Renee's bedroom. Mysterious occurrences accumulate, until Fred is arrested for Renee's murder. While in the cell though, he transforms into young Pete, who then meets gangster moll Alice, a perfect doppelganger of Renee. Pete has to face the demons of his past – first of which is gangster boss Dick Laurent. Lynch once described his most radical film puzzle, which he composed again with Barry Gifford of WILD AT HEART fame and which show some resemblance to the »Faust« myth, as a »psychogenic fugue«. His associative mixture of horror and crime elements pave an impressive journey into madness, full of repetitions, variations and déjà-vus. The endlessly twisted moebius strip that is LOST HIGHWAY sometimes feels too dark to see, mysterious and sensuous, and sometimes has a grotesque sense of humour.
