Everyone that's bored with Hollywood biopic tropes should give THE TWENTIETH CENTURY a try. This cinematic biography of long-time Canadian prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King does away with all the usual pompous gravity: In his debut feature shot on 16mm film Matthew Rankin tells King's life story in surreal Freudian dream logic – with a good measure of Monty Python-esque humour and the post-modern aesthetic of his fellow countryman Guy Maddin. A political winter's tale from the early 20th century that holds all kinds of messages for our current times.
