When superintendent Vincent Ruiz consults Hamburg-based psychiatrist Joe Jessen about a gruesome murder case, Jessen recognizes similarities to the violent fantasies of one of his patients. To save himself and his family he will now have to investigate on his own. Starting a new franchise is always a delicate task, but this pilot is magnificent stuff. Working off Australian author Michael Robotham's bestselling thrillers, the directing duo of Cyrill Boss and Philipp Stennert paint an unrelentingly bleak world for this psychological nail-biter. It's still unusual for German TV to have fallible heroes with a spotted past battling against brutal psychopaths with sinister plans, but Ulrich Noethen,  Juergen Maurer and Nikolai Kinski are given enough freedom and space to develop these characters and their inner lives to let all of it become terrifically alive.
