phoenix award 2023

The role of cinema is to fathom the complexities of the human soul, says Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania, born in 1977. Her latest film FOUR DAUGHTERS, which celebrated its world premiere this year in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, shows what she means by this. The main character Olfa, the film is originally called LES FILLES D'OLFA (“The Daughters of Olfa”), is a victim of a patriarchal system, but also a woman who has passed on the violence done to her to her own daughters. The longer the film goes on, the more layers of this “simple woman’s” personality are uncovered, whose two eldest daughters have joined the Islamic State.

Kaouther Ben Hania is currently in Los Angeles to support the Oscar campaign for her film. On the occasion of the phoenix award ceremony at the FILM FESTIVAL COLOGNE, the protagonists of FOUR DAUGHTERS, Olfa Al Hamrouni and her two younger daughters Aya and Tayssir Chikhaoui, and one of the producers will be present to talk about the film.

The talk lasts approx. 45 minutes.
