Argentina’s most experimental director Lisandro Alonso (JAUJA) starts EUREKA as a Western in the classic 4:3 ratio: a closed-lipped killer (Alonso’s favourite actor Viggo Mortensen) meets a resolute saloon owner in some lawless backwater town. But the black-and-white images turn out to be a film within a film, being shown on TV on a reservation in Dakota. And then you are right in the middle of a mesmerizing movie about myths and post-colonial heritage which will ultimately travel as far as the Brazilian jungle in the 1970s.
