Jean-Dominique Bauby is a prisoner in his own body. The 43-year old editor in chief of the fashion magazine Elle has suffered a stroke and can move nothing but his left eyelid since then. But Bauby won’t give up: He still has his quick mind, his knowledge and his memories. With the help of only his eyelid and an assistant he starts to dictate whole texts. Julian Schnabel’s masterful direction elevates Bauby’s perspective to a unique cinematic experience on the screen.
