After his foray into deep space with AD ASTRA, director James Gray returns to the streets of his hometown New York City. Paul is the name given to his alter ego, a twelve-year old who gets transferred to a new school in the late summer of 1980 and finds a new friend: a black boy called Davis. Paul dreams of a life as an artist while his grandpa tries to teach him decency and good morals, but in a world steeped in racism that’s easier said than done. A gut-wrenching film about losing the illusion that the US is the land of unlimited possibilities.
