It’s the near future: In Brazil’s arid inland the inhabitants of the town of Bacurau are cut off from their water supply. And as if that wasn’t enough, a group of Western tourists attracts the locals’ suspicions – and rightly so, as it turns out. The third film of Brazil’s Kleber Mendonça Filho (AQUARIUS) is part spaghetti western, part horror movie, part political satire and much more, using the methods of genre cinema to deliver a scathing verdict on his home country’s right-wing populism. Also starring: a wonderfully diabolical Udo Kier.
