Johnny is “The Panther”, a lovable asshole in his better moments, a psychotically violent criminal in his worst. And: Johnny is an informant for the police. How long can his double-cross go on, which is supposed to bring him enough money to finally get out of debt? Lars Eidinger has rarely been better cast than in this breathless ode to the beautiful ugliness of Leverkusen. Jan Bonny creates a character that in his radical restlessness and ambivalence is truly rare in German film. It’s less of a true crime film and more of an existentialist portrait.
