This shocking documentary about the systemic abuse in the children’s home of a free church congregation in Southern Germany draws a picture of horror from interviews with survivors: Constant psychological and sexual violence, coupled with religious fundamentalism, threatened the children inside and outside the home. The suicide rate was shocking, but still no help ever came. Julia Charakter’s film serves as a beacon of remembrance, but also as a portrait of a community that still has cover-up and trivialisation deep in its Christian bones.
