Poor as a beggar, Karoline struggles to make ends meet in Copenhagen after the First World War. But then she becomes pregnant by a man who will not marry her. During an abortion attempt, she meets the charismatic Dagmar, who promises to have a solution to her problem. It’s hard to know what to praise more: the performances of the leading actors, Michal Dymek’s masterly black and white camerawork, the contrasting modern music by Frederikke Hoffmeier or Magnus von Horn’s virtuoso direction – a dark masterpiece.
