J is between genders: The teenager is living with their parents, sister and her boyfriend in rural America. J starts to reach puberty, and when the parents leave for some time, J finds a way towards an own identity. With a dream-like, quiet atmosphere and many nature images Iranian-born director Anahita Ghazvinizadeh and producer Jane Campion created a sensitive coming of age drama that premiered in Cannes, and which also manages to give insight into the Iranian American immigrant culture. The young amateur actors, the enchanting camerawork and the quiet music by Vincent Gillioz are stand-outs in this film tackling a difficult subject with utter fearlessness.
