Love in the times of the Cold War: Just as in Oscar and European Film Award winning drama IDA (2013) Pawel Pawlikowski delves at first into Poland's past with stylish black and white images. It's there in the late 40s that music ethnologist and pianist Wiktor meets the singer Zula. They start an amour fou that spans over a decade and takes them all the way to Berlin and Paris. Wiktor's und Zula's desire for freedom not only gets them into trouble with their Communist supervisors but also challenges their love several times. For this political-musical love story, based on his parents' story, Pawlokowski received the Golden Palm for best director in this year's Cannes film festival.
