In 1974 Japanese officer Hirō Onoda surrendered on the Philippine island of Lubang – almost thirty years after his country lost the Second World War. Arthur Harari tells this unbelievable story of an excessive sense of duty without any pseudo-mythological romantization or grandeur, but with an objectivity that is classical in the best sense of the word.
