How do you approach a woman who throughout her life entrenched herself behind a thicket of legends, half-truths and lies, asks filmmaker Andres Veiel (BEUYS). He spent more than two years researching the estate of Hitler’s favourite filmmaker and sifting through documents. Veiel does not fall for Riefenstahl’s self-mythologisation. Above all, he exposes the popular separation of her person and her art as problematic: because her films and photos show that she was not simply a political opportunist.
