Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Aretha Franklin and, more recently, millennial jazz star Laufey – they all sang “Misty”. But the composer of this standard has been somewhat forgotten, even though Erroll Garner was considered the most successful African-American jazz pianist in the 50s and 60s. The documentary film by Georges Gachot combines archive material with interviews with musical companions, his manager and his last girlfriend. Scenes with Garner's daughter, whom he never recognised, are particularly moving.
After the screening, the Norwegian jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær, who composed the soundtrack and also appears in the film, will play live in the Filmhaus.
