Evelyn Wang (Michelle Yeoh) owns a launderette and is in trouble with taxes and her family. She is busy preparing for her father's (James Hong) birthday party and Evelyn's husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan) has no chance to talk to her about the divorce. Daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu), on the other hand, infuriates her mother by planning to bring her friend Becky (Tallie Medel) to the party, even though Evelyn has a problem with Joy's sexual orientation. Evelyn's life hasn't turned out the way she once imagined. But she gets the chance to change that.
