Shy Travis Bickle has suffered from insomnia since returning home from the Vietnam War and therefore works as a taxi driver in New York at night. In doing so, he sees the abysses and dark sides of the city. When he meets the attractive and educated campaign worker Betsy, she appears to him like a shining angel in a metropolis full of violence and filth. He wants to help the underage prostitute.
